Renovation contract: 8 clauses to read before you sign
A one-page estimate isn't a contract. These 8 clauses are.
Before you sign or pay a deposit, check for: 1) scope and materials, with brands and model numbers; 2) the contractor's legal name, license and insurance; 3) a total price with allowances listed; 4) a payment schedule tied to finished work; 5) start and finish dates; 6) change orders signed in writing before the work; 7) who pulls permits and books inspections; 8) warranty length and lien waivers. California requires a written contract on home improvement jobs over $500; rules vary, so check your state. Not legal advice.
