Hang curtains high and wide: 4–6″ up, 8–12″ out

Curtains hung on the frame make windows look small.

The rules: mount the rod 4–6″ above the window frame (higher if you can), and extend it 8–12″ past each side so open panels stack on the wall instead of over the glass. Buy panels that add up to 2–2.5× the window width for fullness, and measure from the rod to the floor: the hem should touch the floor or float about ½″ above it. Standard lengths are 84, 96 and 108″.
